Siemens Industry Software N.V., located in Leuven, is part of Siemens Digital Industry Software and provides solutions for test and simulation of mechanical and electronic systems with proven track record in the area of experimental, numerical and hybrid (mixed experimental-numerical) system modelling for noise, vibration, durability and dynamics, performing substantial in-house research on advanced methods and applications. It develops the multibody simulation software ‘Simcenter 3D Motion’ which can be used to create high-fidelity models of vehicle suspensions. Moreover, ‘Simcenter Testlab’ is also part of the Siemens DIS software portfolio. The latter is used, together with the SCADAS acquisition systems, to acquire measurement data during operational condition of dynamic systems. Furthermore, the optimization and design exploration software ‘Simcenter HEEDS’ is also developed by Siemens.
Although very high-fidelity (Digital Twin) of a vehicle can be realized, it is often necessary to perform model updating activities to ensure that the vehicle model fully represents the real vehicle. In this project a full vehicle model and a collection of data acquired on the real vehicle will be inserted in an optimization loop to identify the uncertain model parameters and obtain a fully validated vehicle model.
Therefore, the proposed plan for the research and development activity is as follows:
1. Familiarize with the Siemens software Simcenter 3D Motion and Testlab
2. Study existing high-fidelity multi-body vehicle model
3. Setup optimization loop between Simcenter 3D Motion and Simcenter HEEDS
4. Perform parameter optimization for model updating
The ideal candidate has a background in mechanical engineering with experience in multi-body dynamics. Knowledge of Matlab/Simulink is strongly recommended. Critical thinking and independent problemsolving skills are a plus. English level: B1.
The candidate will work closely with other researchers of the Simulation 3D division working on related topics, reporting status of the work by means of short oral presentations and weekly feedback meetings.
Project duration: 6 months. Starting date: September 2019. Siemens will cover the cost of the lodging during the internship.
