California scraps safety driver for autonomous cars

The state of California has eliminated the need for a safety driver in an autonomous car.

Drivers were previously required to take over control in case of an emergency in California, resulting in companies to start experiments elsewhere, such as in Arizona. After lobby of the industry, California now changed it’s regulation, but the state requires companies to count the amount of “disengagements”, in which a (remote) human operator has to take over control. The new law goes into effect on the 2nd of April.
